During India’s chairmanship of the BRICS Forum in 2016, the India Exim Bank, being the nominated member development bank from India under the BRICS Interbank Cooperation Mechanism (ICM), had instituted the India Exim Bank BRICS Economic Research Annual Citation (BRICS Citation), at the instance of the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. The objective of the Citation is to encourage and stimulate advanced doctoral research by nationals of the BRICS countries (Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and UAE), on economics related topics of relevance to the member nations of BRICS.
This year, the tenth edition of the BRICS Economic Research Annual Citation (2025) is being introduced. With the support from the member development banks of the BRICS ICM viz. the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES), Brazil; the State Development Corporation (VEB.RF), Russia; the China Development Bank Corporation (CDB), China, and the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), South Africa over the years, the Citation has gained much appreciation and wide visibility among the BRICS nations. This is also reflected in the good number of applications received each year from all member nations.
The annual Citation, comprises of a medal and prize money of Indian Rupees 1.5 million (equivalent) (approximately USD 18,000) which is sponsored by India Exim Bank. The Citation would serve to encourage scholars to undertake focused research studies on topics of contemporary relevance to BRICS.
The Citation accepts as entries, Doctoral Theses written by nationals of any of the eleven member nations of BRICS, who have been awarded a Doctorate or accepted for award of a Doctorate from any recognized nationally accredited University or academic institution globally, during the period January 2020 to March 2025. The broad focus of the eligible theses could be international economics, trade, development, and related aspects of financing, which may also have particular relevance especially to BRICS nations/ member development banks of BRICS. The brochures containing the detailed guidelines of the Citation and terms and conditions for application are enclosed herewith, for reference. The last date for receipt of the applications is stipulated as March 31, 2025.
India Exim Bank envisages to complete the process of evaluation of the entries by an expert Citation Jury, which would be constituted by India Exim Bank, and formally announce the Citation winner during the forthcoming BRICS Annual Financial Forum 2025 to be hosted by BNDES, expected to be held later during the year.
The details of the Citation are being disseminated globally across Universities and to prospective applicants. Details of the Citation have also been shared with the member development banks of the BRICS ICM for further dissemination in their respective regions. We are now writing to the missions of BRICS nations based in India and Indian missions based globally requesting their assistance in wide dissemination of the details of the Citation.
